The entire admission process for institutes under JEE Main through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) consists of four steps:
Step 1: Online Registration
In this process, candidates eligible for central counseling are required to register themselves for online counseling in the CSAB website. There is a provision for fresh registration before the fourth and spot round for those who did not register before the first round.
Step 2: Online Choice Filling and Locking
After online registration, you will be able to exercise your branch/institute choices on the CSAB website using Internet.
Step 3: Online Seat Allotment
Candidates are offered seats based on their choices in the order of merit (JEE Main All India Rank) over multiple rounds of allotment. Candidates who are allotted a seat or offered admission has to report to any one of the Reporting Centers during the specified time frames, get the documents verified and pay the initial fee to mark their acceptance of the offer of seat and exercise upgrade options, if required. Candidates will be issued provisional admission letter.
Step 4. Getting Admitted to Allotted Institute
Candidates are required to be physically present at the Institute where the candidate is getting admitted (also called Allotted Institute) after verification of all original documents as per the procedure of the allotted institute.
Seat Allotment Rounds
The counselling involves four rounds of seat allotment, followed by a spot admission round. For seat allotment, CSAB uses the All India Rank (60% of JEE Main marks and 40% of Class 12th or equivalent marks) prepared by CBSE after normalization.
Both Government Funded and Self Financed Institutes participate in seat allocation through CSAB. Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) are National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT and IITDM) and other Centrally or State Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). These institutes participate in all the rounds of seat allotment. Self Financed Technical Institutes (SFTIs) participate only in spot round.
In NITs, 50% of the seats are for Home State (HS) Quota and the remaining 50% for Others State (OS) Quota. In IIITs, other GFTIs and SFTIs, the seats are allocated on the basis of HS/OS/All India Quota, as applicable.
If you has been allotted a seat and does not report to any of the reporting centre (RC) to complete all reporting formalities, (online initial fees payment, document verification and provisional allotment letter collection), the allotted seat will be cancelled and you will not be eligible for any further rounds in CSAB except Spot Round.
There is a Spot Round for admission after the first four rounds & internal sliding within institute are over. Primary difference between First Four Rounds and Spot Round is that in the Spot Round, you pay the fees in advance and thereby agree to accept the seat if allocated to you. There is no provision of Fees refund paid for spot round, if you chooses not to accept the seat.
