The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous institutes of higher education. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 as institutions of national importance alongside National Institutes of Technology. There are twenty-three IITs. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council. The total number of seats for undergraduate programmes in all IITs is about over 11,000.
